J. Williams has seized the #1 singles slot for 2010 and Susan Boyle has sold the most albums for the second year running.
Kiwi artists have dominated the 2010 end of year charts with J. Williams taking out the #1 singles slot and Gin Wigmore nabbing second spot for the year’s highest selling album.
On the singles front, it proved to be a boom year for New Zealand artists. Seven of the top 20 biggest-selling singles of the year were by Kiwis, including the year's #1 - You Got Me by J.Williams feat. Scribe.
The platinum-selling song made its debut in mid-February, taking a further five weeks to make its way to the top of the Singles Chart where it remained for four weeks. The song also represented a milestone for rapper Scribe who chalked up his fourth #1, more than any other New Zealander.
Top selling album
She may not have quite matched the mega-platinum sales of her debut album last year, but Susan Boyle still managed a repeat of her chart-dominating efforts in 2009.
What may come as a surprise, however, is that the top spot isn’t filled by her 2010 album The Gift, released in late November. That sits at #4 for the year. It's her debut album, I Dreamed A Dream, which again tops the year-end chart, just as it did in 2009.
I Dreamed A Dream began 2010 at #1 and remained in the top spot for seven weeks. Other than for a short period late in the year, it has remained in the Top40 for most of 2010, re-entering the list again following the release of the Scottish singer’s follow-up effort in November.
Newcomers Florence And The Machine had the biggest-selling digital album of 2010.
RIANZ CEO Campbell Smith says Kiwi domination of the singles charts this year provides a real boost for local artists.
“While the album charts have again reflected what a juggernaut album Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed A Dream” has been, we are delighted with the impact that New Zealand artists have had on the singles chart in 2010, and 2011 is showing all the signs of being another great chart year for New Zealand music,” Smith says.
In 2010, the Music DVD Chart was dominated by one of the biggest music acts of all-time. Michael Jackson's This Is ItDVD, the documentary–concert film directed by Kenny Ortega which documented Jackson's rehearsals and preparation for the ill-fated concert series of the same name, was the year's biggest seller. The posthumous release spent 15 consecutive weeks at #1.
