Music News - New Zealand, Are You Ready To Rumba?

New Zealand, Are You Ready To Rumba?
Rumba takes place in Auckland on 30 November.

25 September 2002 - 0 Comments

It’s Rumba – the world’s biggest festival – which blew away 90,000 fans in Melbourne and Sydney last year, will reach an audience of more than 200,000 this summer.

The 2002 Rumba line-up is hot and features a huge Australasian contingent, with over half the bill boasting Australasia’s hottest acts. Rumba will showcase some amazing stars from fields outside of music too.

Ready to Rumba in 2002 is edgy US artist Pink, who has a huge following in New Zealand and topped the charts early this year with her killer anthem “Get The Party Started” from her platinum-selling album Missundaztood.

A first for New Zealand, and one of the most exciting pieces of news, Rumba exclusively announces Natalie Imbruglia’s first New Zealand concert ever. Natalie has risen to the top of the entertainment industry and is one of the hottest celebrities in the world.

Due to popular demand – and returning to Rumba in 2002 – is Shaggy, one of the world’s highest selling pop stars, who was widely acclaimed as the highlight of last year’s Australian event. His new single “Hey Sexy Lady” will be released in September.

Abs from Five, who wound fans into such a spasmodic frenzy during his guest spot last year with UK boy band Blue, has been invited back to Rumba to perform his brand new single "What You Got”.

Hot new R&B sensation Toya from the US is also ready to Rumba in 2002. Her single “No Matta What (Party All Night)” from her self-titled debut album raced straight into the New Zealand Top 50 off the back of her Top 20 hit, the debut single “I Do”.

And as if that’s not enough, the confirmed New Zealand and Australian contingent looks set to give the internationals a run for their money at Rumba in 2002.

Hot off the release of her double platinum, Number One album Beautiful Collision, Bic Runga will make her first live appearance in over four years at Rumba in Auckland. And the Tui-winning, platinum-selling Che Fu and The Krates will blow fans away with a live set including the latest smash hit “Top Floor”.

The ARIA-winning, platinum-selling Melbourne trio Taxiride will also blow fans away, with a live set including their smash hit “Creepin’ Up Slowly”. And another artist returning to Rumba is the gorgeous Sophie Monk, who is launching her solo career to coincide with the tour.

Zed and K’lee are also confirmed for Rumba and both will showcase tracks from their new albums. Also appearing are hip-hop sensations Nesian Mystik, who has recently had two Top Ten hits in New Zealand, both of them gold-selling singles!

Rumba is not only about music – it’s also a huge lifestyle and entertainment event featuring masses of the coolest activities around.

There’s Rumba TV – the event’s very own on-site broadcast showing on two giant screens framing the main stage. Rumba TV crews will roam the event, filming the crowd and capturing the backstage action as it happens. Between artist sets there’ll also be video clips, interviews and chats with fans. It’ll be a truly unique and interactive experience. Rumba TV was a major highlight of the inaugural Rumba last year in both Sydney and Melbourne.

The world’s biggest festival will also feature an Autograph Stage where fans will be able to meet their favourite stars, the Rumba Mall made up of stalls and exhibits, and the Chill Zone where frenzied fans can take a break from the musical mayhem happening in the main arena.

Rumba 2002’s staging will feature brand new, multi-million dollar production – some of the biggest ever witnessed in New Zealand. With over 400 hundred people involved – including production personnel, bands, road crew, technicians and broadcast crew – Rumba is set to be huge.

The inaugural Rumba in 2001 showcased some of the world’s biggest music stars including Shaggy, Craig David and Emma Bunton. Plus there were local pop heroes too, such as Bardot, Tina Arena, paulmac and Human Nature, and a swag of media and sports stars thrown into the mix, including legendary Ian Thorpe. Rumba took fun to new heights!

Rumba is the world’s biggest pop festival and your official passport to the best day ever.

We’ll keep you posted with more international and local acts yet to be announced!
