The very nice people at Dunedin's Arc Cafe have won the Dunedin City Council Trustpower Awards overall prize for "an organisation making substantial contribution to the Dunedin community". Arc is not only one of the most supportive live venues in Dunedin, but it's offshoot record label Arclife Records has also been releasing NZ music for a few years now, with over 20 CDs now on its catalogue (most of them available via the NoiZyland store).
Arc won a chunky trophy, a framed certificate, $1500 and a trip to Rotorua to represent Dunedin at the national awards. It's the first time an arts organisation has won a regional award. The venue hosts poetry, jazz, film, dance, performance, rock, techno, arcoustic, experimental music, kids events, public meetings and workshops. The cafe is organic, vegetarian, vegan and almost zero waste.
The business is child and parent friendly, mental health people friendly, provides free internet, free phone and free gallery space. Arc was acknowledged as a vital breeding ground and nursery for new talent and professional development. Good on ya Arc.
