NZ On Air Music News and Funding Decisions - December 2012

20 December 2012 - 0 Comments

NZ Music On The Radio

Local content on all radio was back over the 20% mark in the week of 18 November. It was 20.21%. That was largely because of good numbers from the b.net and iwi radio stations, but commercial radio was up too, posting the best weekly numbers since July.

Breaking New Music

We have confirmed funding for our current stable of new music features on the big radio networks. That's features like The Slab on The Edge and The Word on the ZM network. These new music features on the Code-bound commercial radio stations are critical to our local content and new music infiltration work. They premiere new songs by New Zealand artists, introducing them to the audience and building familiarity.

Ruling The Radio

The biggest New Zealand song on the radio at the moment is Wake Up by Dawn Raid's soulstress, Aaradhna, which took up residence at the top of the airplay charts in September and is still there. Come On Homewritten by radio hit-maker, Vince Harder and recorded by The Edge boy band, Titanium is #2 and Never Leave Me Again from the evergreen OpShop is #3. The Aaradhna song is the first single from an NZ On Air-funded album. The Titanium and OpShop songs haveboth had Making Tracks funding.

New NZ Music Online

The Amplifier-run, NZ On Air-funded new music discovery website, theaudience was launched at the end of May and after seven months, traffic continues to grow. Visits are now up to 290,000 and there have been close to a million page views. The latest Wild Card "people's choice" Making Tracks songs to come through theaudience are by Auckland folk music group, Paper Cranes and Nelson pop punk trio, Little Oceans.

Making More Tracks

We are now 15 rounds into the Making Tracks singles-based funding scheme. We have taken in 1,800 applications and funded 417 songs since July last year when the scheme was launched. Making Tracks now takes a two-month break and returns in February next year. During the break, we have taken down the Making Tracks website for renovations. Many of the improvements signaled in the Making Tracks one year review will be a feature of the new site when it returns in mid-January.

Showcasing New Music

We held the second of our 2012-2013 new music showcases for radio at Back Beat in Auckland on 14 November. This time, we showcased young alt country outfit, Five Mile Town, Critics Choice finalist, Loui The Zu and Aaradhna who did a breathtaking performance of two songs from her new Treble & Reverb album along with a Sam Cooke and a Patsy Cline number accompanied by just one guitar. Five Mile Town and Loui The Zu are Making Tracks graduates and Treble & Reverb is an NZ On Air-funded album.

Congratulations to ...

… all the winners at the 2012 NZ Music Awards. Our New Zealand music work was well represented at the Vodafone NZ Music Awards held in Auckland on 1 November. NZ On Air-funded artists won all 19 categories in which they were competing. The NZ On Air Radio Airplay Award went to Six60 for Don't Forget Your Roots. Six60 got the trifecta - Highest Selling Album, Highest Selling Single and Biggest Radio Song. The NZ On Air Best Music Video went to the production company, Special Problems for their video for The Naked and Famous song The Sun. And as we all know, Kimbra cleaned up!
