Brett Adams and Dianne Swann are New Zealand’s most musically talented couple as The Bads. Holed up in their rural West Auckland home, they have written some of the country’s most enduring tunes including ‘So Alive’, ‘Helensville’ and ‘Drop In The Ocean’. Together they are a force of nature.
And now they have announced the March 15 release of their latest album, TRAVEL LIGHT.
TRAVEL LIGHT is a collection of 11 songs, all recorded at The Lab Studios in Auckland, engineered by Olly Harmer and mastered at Metropolis in London by Tony Cousins.
As well as founding band members, Brett Adams and Dianne Swann, the album also features regular band mates, Wayne Bell (Dave Dobbyn), Dave Kahn (Don Mcglashan) and Mike Hall (Pluto), with guest appearances from Chris O’Connor (The Phoenix Foundation) and Ben King (Goldenhorse).
The Bads have enjoyed an impressive musical history since, as The Julie Dolphin, they toured extensively in the UK, receiving accolades from the British music press for their EP’s and debut album, LIT.
Since their return to New Zealand in 2003, the duo has released two albums as The Bads, (2005’s EARTH FROM SPACE and 2009’s SO ALIVE) toured the country extensively, opened for the likes of Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, The Swell Season and Rodrigo Y Gabriella, produced music for local TV programmes, Homegrown, Hunger for The Wild and Coastern and have had songs feature in TV shows in New Zealand, Australia and the US.
The pair often writes separately, but always with the collective project in mind. Says Swann: “When Brett and I started writing together in London it was pretty magical. We had this telepathy which was exciting”.
TRAVEL LIGHT has come together beautifully with lyrical and musical references to the twists and turns they have experienced throughout their musical career. ‘California’ the first track from the album can be heard here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZYfyykFABY
TRAVEL LIGHT is released on Friday, March 15 and is available to pre-order now:
