Yet another government-inspired initiative to take New Zealand music to the world was launched on the 18th of July, with the official launch of the Music Industry Export Group. With core aims of distributing music internationally, funding niche markets and promoting Maori music, the MIEG should be another useful tool for New Zealand acts looking for assistance in getting their tunes (and themselves) overseas to where the big markets really are.
Consisting of members of the New Zealand Music Industry Commission (which has already done a lot of work in this field), as well as top musicians, industry promoters and recording company representatives, it's certainly a brains trust that has what it takes to deliver the results that the government is after.
The team will hold its first meeting in September and will start work on a plan setting out ways the government can help it achieve its aims.
Among its members are Brent Hanson, the New Zealander who currently chairs MTV Europe, Moana Maniapoto, the chair of the Maori Music Industry Coalition, Ray Columbus, a musician and a manager, Paul Ellis, former vice-president of Sony Music Publishing, and Mike Chunn, formerly of Split Enz and the director of New Zealand operations of the Australasian Performing Rights Association (APRA).
