Underground Wellington Producer Paddy Fred releases You Belong – the first single off his forthcoming debut EP Laminate due for release on 10th May.
You Belong features the vocal talents of friend and fellow Wellingtonian Alby Love aka Louis Baker who was chosen as the only New Zealand participant at the Red Bull Music Academy in New York this May. The beats were written by Paddy Fred with Alby Love crafting the lyrics over a series of months allowing the tone and emotion of the song space to evolve. Paddy Fred says “It was a lot of fun recording with Alby Love, much laughter and many deluxe mixed cocktail nuts went down."
Paddy Fred's sound has been described as, ”he takes Flying Lotus - both the hip-hop throwback version and current modern day glitch-sound and sprinkles it with extra jazz and funk giving it a hybrid soul".
Paddy Fred is an accomplished musician having played guitar in The Aviators and bass in Harbour City Electric. When both bands went on hiatus Paddy Fred decided to start focusing on his own “completely self-indulgent” music. Recording improvised synthesizers, drum machines and guitar, Paddy Fred then carves the tracks in and out of each other until he has the essence of the song.
Laminate his debut 5 track EP also features Estere and Lisa Preston.
