A group of eight students from the New Zealand School of Music has been invited to play at the Canberra International Music Festival this May. All eight musicians have been students of the New Zealand String Quartet, artists in residence at the New Zealand School of Music.
The Festival, held from 10-19 May 2013, features music from Australian, American and British composers performed by Australian and international artists.
Eight of New Zealand’s most talented young string students – Alice McIvor (viola), Annabel Drummond (violin), Arna Shaw (violin), Jonathan Tanner (violin), Sophie Williams (cello), Julian Baker (violin), Kate Oswin (violin) and Hester Bell Jordan(violin) – have been invited to play on their own and as part of larger ensembles.
As well as being students of the New Zealand String Quartet, the young musicians also attend the annual Adam Chamber Music Festival in Nelson, which is run by the New Zealand String Quartet.
“The students have been given a wonderful opportunity to represent New Zealand and the New Zealand School of Music. This is yet another example of how the New Zealand String Quartet is nurturing New Zealand’s young musical talent,” says New Zealand String Quartet Manager Rose Campbell.
The New Zealand String Quartet will also perform at the Canberra International Music Festival as artists in residence, with guest member New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Assistant Concert Master Donald Armstrong taking the place of first violinist Helene Pohl, who was injured in February. Helene is recovering from a broken finger, following a cycling incident in Wellington.
As well as their Festival commitments, the young musicians will perform at a special event for the New Zealand High Commission in Canberra on Friday 17 May. The New Zealand High Commission in Canberra has been very supportive in helping all the NZ musicians to make it to Canberra.
