Top Maori producer Richie Campbell is excited that years of careful planning have culminated in the launch of Kahu Records (KR), complete with a strategic plan to have high quality Maori music storming Japan and Asia.
Richie says the times come for a new Maori Record label, and it’s time for the world to embrace the richness of Maori music.
Richie has partnered up with Dave Graham of the Japanese-based SPM / Nexus Records Japan, which has strong corporate alliances and international distribution experience.
Widely acknowledged as one of NZs top funk drummers (ex-Ardijah, Moana & the Moahunters, Indigenous Funk), Richie has also built up a credible reputation as a leading music producer. While he has produced charting material for his own project Indigenous Funk Company, Moana & the Moahunters, Billy TK Jnr and the great Dalvanius, it is his ability to spot talent, visualize a project from recording to release, all the while capturing the artist’s vision which sees him carving out a niche in the music industry.
KR in conjunction with Te Mangai Paho will shortly release Tangiwai Vol 1, a collaborative project with Te Rangihau Gilbert. Tangiwai is described as ‘a slick contemporary Maori language album full of inspiring waiata (songs) with a modern twist.’
A single E kii mai koe Ae, by hot newcomer Leon Wharekura will be followed by a compilation entitled Dis Funk Channel. This will feature tracks by emerging artists Kat Theo, Gail Tee, “Koers n Nume, K – Denz, Barry Southgate, Lauren, Starlight, Anthony Collier (aka Sparx.) and Indigenous Funk Company.
‘My ultimate goal is to reveal the wealth of talent that is in N.Zs young, in particular Maori and Polynesian performers,’ says Richie Campbell.
