Outward Sound Recipients Round 3 2013

12 September 2013 - 0 Comments

Outward Sound is pleased to announce the 3rd round of grant recipients for 2013.

Seven International Music Market Development grants and one Business Development grant were awarded.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra

After disbanding The Mint Chicks, Ruban Nielson planned to quit music and take on a day job. For a hobby, he started recording new  music in his basement and putting the results on line anonymously under the name Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Interest in his new project grew quickly and soon this new project had become a full fledged band, releasing albums and on two US labels and touring the world.

The band’s second album II recorded for label Jagjaguwar has received wide critical acclaim with Clash Music giving it a 9 out of 10, saying "from opener From The Sun, which recalls George Harrison-psychedelia, to the tender Family Stone shuffle of the closing of Secret Xtians, II displays both a glowing warmth in its production and a deft use of space that illuminate Nielson’s superbly crafted compositions.”

Already a seasoned touring band Unknown Mortal Orchestra are hitting the world’s stages once again playing over 40 shows across two continents to support this new album.

Aaradhna

When Aaradhna’s harmonies spill through the speakers in her opening track, you learn that it’s not just treble and reverb that go good together. It’s her silky voice over that doowop style (a sound she likes to call Retro/Metro), and her newfound attitude partnered with old school soul. It’s Aaradhna and music that go good together.

An album worthy of the five star reviews it has been receiving, Treble & Reverb is now taking Aaradhna to the international stage. Having recently signed a multi-album deal with Universal Republic Records – Aaradhna is set to become one of New Zealand’s hottest exports.

Electric Wire Hustle

With their debut self-titled album Electric Wire Hustle achieved cult status. A number one song on Hype Machine, five-star reviews from the likes of Okayplayer, and BBC Radio support from Gilles Peterson and Benji B secured them unwavering support internationally. A flood of production requests followed their first release, the fruits of which we will see in 2013, along with their heavily anticipated second album.

This October Electric Wire Hustle return to NYC to perform once again at the CMJ Music Marathon.

“Already given the coveted Gilles Peterson seal of approval, and wrapping up their first tour of the states, Electric Wire Hustle are on their way to groundbreaking status.” Revivalist/ Okayplayer.com

Ghost Wave

Supporting the US release of their debut album Ages through the Flying Nun Records US office the band are returning to the US this October. Their album release tour includes performances at The CMJ Music Marathon and Filter/Culture Collide Festival in LA.

“Ghost Wave are one of those rare new bands that already knows exactly what they want. The last time we heard this much rookie talent from Auckland, New Zealand, it came in the form of The Naked and Famous, and we all know how that turned out (well. very well.). On debut single Sunsetter, The Wave set their sights high and aim straight for anthem status, constructing two and a half minutes of sunkissed 70's bliss around a massive Dandy Warhols lick that hides in the crosshairs of Deerhunter and Tame Impala.” – Neon Gold Blog

Myele Manzanza

For the past six years Myele Manzanza has formed one third of the Wellington production/performance trio Electric Wire Hustle (EWH) who rose to international acclaim after the release of their debut album in 2009.

Since then Myele has toured extensively as part of the band throughout Europe and the US, Australia and Asia performing at high profile events and festivals and has established an international profile through his association with the band.

Recently Myele's individual talent and international potential has been recognised by BBE Records (UK) and his solo album, One, has been signed for worldwide release. Myele has since stepped away from the band in order to focus on promoting this album and to develop his own solo career.

Tiny Ruins

Tiny Ruins is the project of musician and songwriter Hollie Fullbrook. Exploring the traditions of folk and blues music, the Tiny Ruins sound is at once accessible, strange and moving. With a focus on the craft of songwriting and lyrics, musically, the songs foray into alternative and even grungy soundscapes, while remaining rich in harmonic and melodic sensibility. Fullbrook’s voice and delicate guitar picking has been likened to Karen Dalton, Nick Drake and Nico, drawing on melancholy and hopeful themes alike.

After touring the UK and Europe extensively over the last few years Tiny Ruins has taken a break to complete a second album due for release in November 2013, following a tour of New Zealand and Australia with Calexico. A sneak preview on influential LA radio station KCRW gained a new fan in the form of legendary director David Lynch. Mr Lynch tweeted:

“Dear Twitter Friends, I heard a group I really like called Tiny Ruins. You should check this out.”

Eden Mulholland

Eden Mulholland’s take on the pop music of the future comes complete with strange voices, ripped apart rhythms, momentary flashes from ethereal orchestras, and all with a complete disregard for genre boundaries. It may well be that Eden’s less conventional path in music - he formerly was a contemporary dancer - has helped shape his experimental approach to composition.

Eden released his debut Album Feed The Beast on June 7th, featuring the new single Blueprint which premiered on the Triple J website clocking over 8,000 Soundcloud plays in the first week of release. "I will echo", the first single was described by the J’s Lewi McKirdy as “super catchy.... infectious hook and the politeness of pop".
