On November 3 2012, after months of preparation, Tiki Taane, his whānau and friends came together in Old St Paul's Church in Wellington to record and film the live album With Strings Attached (Alive & Orchestrated) which will be officially released January 31.
With the help of NZ On Air and TVNZ, the crew were able to capture the beautiful and powerful performances of Tiki and his live band The Dub Soldiers, kapahaka group Te Pou O Mangatawhiri and a string orchestra in the angelic setting of Old St Paul’s.
“Stylistically we wanted With Strings Attached to cover a wide range of my music catalogue,” says Tiki. “ We chose classics like solo acoustic number Always On My Mind then delved into an earlier ballad Love Your Ways, which I wrote in my Salmonella Dub days. We also included more atmospherically intense songs like Tangaroa and the opening dubstep song Whakakotahi, both of which performance-wise, visually feature the power of Te Pou O Mangatawhiri Kapahaka.”
The live and orchestrated version of Summertime featuring MC Tali will be released to radio this week.
For the musical score, Tiki was fortunate to work closely with two key members of the prestigious NZ Symphony Orchestra - Steve Bremner who arranged the music and Hamish McKeich who conducted the entire project.
With Strings Attached (Alive and Orchestrated) features talented Shapeshifter friends Pdigsss, Sambora, Nicky and Reno, Jason Johnston (Jakob), and majestic vocalists Ria Hall, Tali and Tiki’s Dad, Uekaha Taane Tinorau.
“I'm so proud of this project and excited to release it for you all to hear,” says Tiki. “I hope you enjoy this album as much as we did making it."
The TVNZ special of Tiki’s With Strings Attached will screen on TVONE, 4 January at 9.30pm.
