The diversity of the Wellington music scene was celebrated on Sunday night (October 19th) at the Wellington Music Awards - The Windys.
Award winners on the night were:
Most Albums Sold By A Wellington Artist
- Pacifier - 'Pacifier'
Song Of The Year
- Rhombus - 'Clav Dub'
Most Radio Airplay By Wellington Artist
- Fur Patrol
Most Television Airplay By Wellington Artist
- Pacifier
Largest Concert By Wellington Based Artist
- New Zealand Symphony Orchestra
Five awards were presented for services to music. Honourees were:
- Rocky Douché – founder Marmalade , industry champion and business consultant
- Pacifier aka Shihad – rock band and Wellington music advocates
- Sir William Southgate – conductor and composer
- Colin Morris – longterm music retailer (38 years)
- Frank Stevens – entertainer
The Windys were organised by new charitable trust, MIDI (Music Industry Development Initiative) and marked the start of the first Wellington Music Week that continues until October 26th.
Next year’s awards will introduce new categories and a full and public voting system.
Sunday’s celebration included performances by a host of Wellington acts, including Wayne Mason, the Phoenix Foundation, Paselode, Strike, The Nomad and The Hiptet among others.
"The aim of holding the awards was to acknowledge Wellington’s music heritage and celebrate recent achievements. The diversity of the winners and the honourees highlights the fact that Wellington is truly rich in musical talent," says MIDI chairperson Stephen Upton.
"We are looking forward to another great year of Wellington music and making The Windys a permanent and exciting event for the music industry."
