Wellington originals band Clockwork is showcasing its unique take on rock and soul in the release of its much anticipated debut album, Turn This Thing Around.
Celebrate with them at the James Cabaret on 16 May 2014, together with support act the Julie Lamb Band in an evening of funky 70s style retro music.
Clockwork blends dance, rock and reggae on a rich percussive foundation. The culmination of three years’ work, Turn This Thing Around, is a refreshing take on the dub/rock genre; an incessant groove that you can’t help but move to. It includes their debut single Do It Right – a masterpiece in percussive but soulful dub that swells into a dramatic rock anthem, hinting at lead singer Matthew Pike’s international career in musical theatre.
The band members are stalwarts of the Wellington rock scene and experienced international performers. Matthew (who also plays bass guitar) and drummer Jason Hotton are both behind the acclaimed Led Zeppelin tribute band Whole Lotta Led and bring heartfelt rock to their new collaboration. Matthew also played in the Big Deal Band a few moons ago alongside Clockwork guitarist and writer/performer Neil Boddington, who adds his classic lead guitar and glam influences. Into this mix, John Gualter (Goose) throws a 30 year career on the horns in a wide range of genres encompassing free jazz, traditional jazz, rock, big band, swing funk and blues. Ivy Padilla and Jasmyne Chung provide soul and energy with their vocals. Ivy is an award-winning musical theatre performer with 20 years’ experience in the music industry. Jasmyne also has a strong background in musical theatre and is a trained musician, singer and dancer.
The album and merchandise will be available on the night or you can purchase online from bandcamp! To check them out further go to http://www.clockworknz.com/
Fasten your seat belts
Clockwork will be supported by the Julie Lamb Band, Wellington’s 747 of 70s vibed indie art rock. A true child of 70s music, award winning Julie Lamb is currently writing her third album to follow Most and Least and Trippin’ the Light. Her songs glide between rock, funk, blues, folk and back again. Catchy but never ordinary, lyrical and witty, her songs are delivered in Julie’s soaring heartfelt voice and a performance that brings the audience on the journey with her. The Julie Lamb Band will play songs from the new album as well as favourites from the first two.
This is a band you can’t ignore. Eleven people on stage held together by Julie, drummer Andrew Richardson and bassist Callum Hazlitt-Black while guitarist Dave Hadley awes the crowd with his inspired riffs. Add to this the patterns and effects of Andreas Lepper on percussion, the power and light of Damian Forlong on trombone and Geraint Scott on saxophone, John McDonald adding flair on keyboard, and the funny, vivacious backing vocalists Deb Rock-Evans, Emma Davey and Miranda Turner and prepare for take-off.
