It’s all about the business side of music at the Music and Audio Institute of NZ (MAINZ) next year with several new initiatives planned.
The Diploma in Music and Event Management will provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to gain employment as entry level managers of musicians and musical events.
MAINZ staff - industry professionals and all still active in the entertainment industry - noticed a lack of management skill in the music industry.
“We then talked to a wide variety of industry players and realised we had strong support from within the music community to offer these type of courses,” says MAINZ Director Derek Keene.
“Current mangers within the industry say they have an immediate need for entry level managers to step in to the industry, ” he says.
It’s also recognised; from extensive research, most musicians and others working in isolation in the music industry experience substantial resource gaps and lack business acumen, good management and marketing experience. MAINZ is seeking to counteract this in 2004 by introducing the Music Industry Business Accelerator, a programme which aims to help musicians set themselves up as a business while developing highly skilled, industry savvy music practitioners and strengthening the position of NZ contemporary music.
MAINZ new additions are in direct response to music industry demands, with the aim being to provide people with the professional skills required to help the industry realise its potential.
MAINZ, a division of Tai Poutini Polytechnic, has a solid reputation within the music industry for its quality, practical based programmes at its campuses in Christchurch and Auckland. A wide variety of well respected courses are offered including Audio Engineering, Contemporary Music Performance and Live Sound and Event Production.
