An arresting new music video for Blind Them With Science, the premiere single from Jakob’s formidably beautiful and long-awaited new album Sines depicts the band doing what they do so very well: performing.
Shot cleanly in black and white by the sharp eye of DOP Peter Janes, the video captures these three veterans of New Zealand’s post-rock scene in a suspenseful triad, playing visually to the tension inherent in the deftly building textural swirl.
Peter Janes is an esteemed video maker in the New Zealand punk and post-punk music scene, having directed videos for almost the entire raft of iconic Flying Nun in the 1980s and beyond -- including The Clean, Tall Dwarfs, The Great Unwashed, The Bats, and The Verlaines -- the iconic ‘bunny’ video for ‘Death and the Maiden’ being Peter’s brainchild.
On Blind Them With Science, Janes casts Jakob in a hypnotic chiaroscuro. Guitar strings and drum hardware glitter under stark white light as the band plays out the slow and grandiose build of the near-seven-minute epic. John Norris’ (of Top Blokes Productions) editing makes for a careful and elegant exposition of the band’s musical synergy, three individual voices falling perfectly in and out of synch to reach an almighty wall of orchestrated chaos.
Showcasing the band’s impeccable skill, the video will see fans rejoice at this intimate glimpse into performative space of one of New Zealand’s most acclaimed live acts captured in a timeless moment.
