Wellington "sultry soul infused rock" band Merrin to debut on US reality series Do I Have A Hit Song today (November 5) at 3PM New Zealand time, streaming live online at indiemusic.tv.
Hosted by Sister Hazel's Drew Copeland, Do I Have A Hit Song showcases indie music artists worldwide as they compete for a development deal with Musik And Film Records.
Merrin lead vocalist Charlie Phillips and guitarist Karl Wootton travelled to Jacksonville, Florida, earlier this year to film the pilot episode - the only New Zealand act featured.
"Dihahs is more about the song itself and whether it’s perceived a potential hit or not. We all played acoustically for the pilot show, even though Merrin’s sound is predominantly alt rock - now we just need everyone to vote!" Phillips says, adding that the potential international exposure is invaluable for indie artists.
While in America, Phillips also recorded a new song with Blessid Union Of Souls frontman Eliot Sloan called I Just Knew.
"When Stephen Wrench (producer/creator of Dihahs) heard my voice on the show, he thought it might complement a song he had written and was working with Eliot Sloan at the time.
"Eric Charlton, one of the producers of Dihahs, kindly offered his studio while we were there. I spent around 16 hours in the studio and got home at 5:30am just in time for breakfast. I'm really proud of what we captured. For me, it is the most beautiful piece I have recorded vocally to date and it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Stephen was gobsmacked."
