Electronic music collective Weird Together are celebrating the release of their new EP No Compromise (Soundway Records) with a video premiere for the title track on MTV IGGY.
Helmed by Tokyo based New Zealand journalist, DJ and music encyclopedia Nick Dwyer and legendary Auckland-based, English music producer and DJ, Dick "Magik J" Johnson, Weird Together is one of the most globally minded dance music projects to emerge from the South Pacific in recent times.
The new video was filmed on the streets of Accra, Ghana, and manages to capture the warmth and humor that the West African city is renowned for. Also making appearances are two of Ghanaian music’s most legendary names – Highlife artists Gyedu Blay Ambolleyand Ebo Taylor.
Produced and directed by Weird Together’s Nick Dwyer & Tu Neill, watch the new video for No Compromise over on MTV Iggy here.
Formed two and a half years ago as a studio project, Weird Together began as an opportunity for the collective’s captains Nick Dywer and Dick Johnson to turn their hand to fashioning their own idiosyncratic re-imaginings of their favourite regional dance music from Africa, South America and the Caribbean.
After securing a prime spot at the Splore Music Festival in 2012, they formed a live band with Karima Madut (vocals), Mavs Adegbite (percussion/vocals), Izak Chadderton (steel pan), Alesano Schuster (steel pan), The Gaza Tripp (guitar) and Yonier Cuevas Vega (MC), and in the process successfully brought their music from the studio to the stage.
Infectiously fun live entertainers, Weird Together are rapidly shifting gears from influenced to influencers. While they originated at the bottom of the map, the impact of their borderless, new, weird internationalism could soon be felt everywhere.
The No Compromise EP is available now on iTunes.
