Attendance at the world’s biggest music trade fair, MIDEM, last week in France, has been beneficial for the wealth of talent that is New Zealand music.

“All the networking and deal making at MIDEM has paid off, “ says Cath Andersen, executive director of the New Zealand Music Industry Commission.

The New Zealand stand, supported by the New Zealand Music Industry Commission, represented labels LOOP Recordings, 833 Records, Yellow Eye Music, Siren Records (Goldenhorse, OpShop) and Intergalactic Records (8 Foot Sativa); classical composer agency SOUNZ; independent music publisher Native Tongue; Migraine Distribution; IT/music company Observatory Crest and Sol de Sully agency representing Moana and the Tribe.

These diverse music businesses were among the 2000 registered exhibitors at the 38th annual MIDEM festival in Cannes, France. Their main objective in attending was to achieve export business.

More than 9,000 buyers and sellers of music and music services from 92 countries were present at MIDEM and there was a lot of interest in what was on offer from New Zealand.

- En route to Cannes, Wellington label LOOP Recordings arranged the licensing of The Black Seeds to France and Belgium as well as Twinset for Europe and Japan.

-Loop Select 05 has been picked up for America through Giant Step/ Caroline.
Loop also licensed six tracks to various compilations - one in USA and 5 in Europe.

- The Scotland Herald printed a half page story on Loop Recordings and previewed Loop Select 05.

- The label Stereo DeLux has picked up 50Hz for distribution in Germany.

- Fat Freddys Drop is in negotiations with the largest independent label in UK and has also secured a North American booking agent.

- There is a large German company interested in licensing The Have and EA Games, producers of the FIFA games, are interested in using them on one of their soundtracks.

- Scilla from SOUNZ has been negotiating an online distribution portal with a global company that would be available for use by all New Zealand composers

- Blindspott have had a potential offer for all of Europe, plus interest from individual territories like Italy. Blindspott have also had strong interest from Canada and USA.

- Intergalatic Records are negotiating a 35-territory deal for their entire catalogue. They have also been offered a blanket European deal.

- Native Tongue have secured sub-licensing deals for their NZ writer catalogue in Germany, Eastern Europe excluding Russia, Switzerland, the Baltic States, Italy and France and are in negotiations with companies from UK, USA, Japan, Spain, South Africa and South America.

- Yellow Eye have had offers for Martin Phillipps and The Chills in USA, UK, Australia and Germany and offers for the new David Kilgour album in Germany, Australia and UK. They have also confirmed a deal for Wellington jazz band CL Bob in Austria, Norway, UK and Australia. Yellow Eye is also negotiating distribution for CL Bob in three Asian territories.

- Goldenhorse have had interest from Germany and USA, and strong interest from a large Australian label.

- A New York label specializing in world music with an urban twist is very interested in the Moana and the Tribe catalogue for America.
