She’s a life-sized doll with a secret. Bought online by an introverted ‘boy next door’ who fantasises about meeting his dream woman, Candy Rose is everything he’s ever wanted. But she proves more than he bargained for in popular Wellington band Supermodel’s latest music video release, Candy Rose.
You may think you’re watching a short film when Candy Rose begins but its short cinematic intro quickly evolves to unfold some Napolean Dynamite-esque dancing and a clever tale centred around notions of desire, intrigue and fantasy.
Shot over two days by 30 crew and cast in a hidden treasure (a disused film studio in Naenae, Lower Hutt) this clever NZ On Air funded music video features some impressive visual effects to enhance its fantastical twist. Talented VFX supervisor Darwin Go (Park Road Post) led the visual effects team including independent freelancers and students from Yoobee Design school (supervised by their HOD Kieran Smith). Creating the effect of the life-sized dolls was a mixture of casting, styling, 2D and 3D VFX work and there were many late nights spent creating more than 90 VFX shots.
This is the third music video from Supermodel’s sophomore album Rimu & Roses which German producer Reinhold Mack, who is responsible for producing some of history’s biggest bands including Queen, David Bowie, ELO, and The Rolling Stones, mixed. Supermodel’s 12-track album Rimu & Roses was released on 17 January 2014.
Supermodel includes frontman/guitarist Mark Hanify, his sister Rose on keys,Michael White on the bass, and drummer Tony Kemp.
