Since the release of her second album, The Golden Echo, (August 2014), which The Guardian called “A masterclass of sheer pop joy” in their 4-star appraisal, New Zealand born proto-pop star Kimbra has kept busy grinding out multiple sold-out North American and Antipodean headline tours in addition to making her debut live appearance at Coachella in April of this year.
More recently, the artist relocated to New York City but not before swinging through Germany’s hipster capital Berlin where she and fellow Kiwis, filmmakers Chester Travis and Timothy Armstrong, crafted the official music video for a fan-favourite from The Golden Echo, the traptinged ode to self-worth, Goldmine.
Meticulously
shot in 100% stop-frame animation (no computer animation whatsoever) requiring 400sq
metres of heavy-duty aluminium foil and 700 polystyrene spikes in an old Berlin
factory, the result
is a breathtakingly abstract, visual feast of gold on greyscale that serves to
add to the overall
mystical qualities of the song.
In Kimbra’s words:
'When we set out to make this video, I wanted to find a way to symbolise what the song Goldmine means to me through an interesting visual metaphor, perhaps in a way that could be open to interpretation while also representing the message of 'inner wealth' and calling on a strength from within. I wrote this song to be like a mantra to me... in order to lift myself in hard times and serve as a reminder that infinite riches lie within me at all times... and I can draw from the world around me to add to that strength and give beauty back.
“The process of gold is a fascinating metaphor for pain and suffering.... Gold must be refined in the fire before it takes on its true character.. Much like life itself, we must be tested and refined before we can give from the deepest part of ourselves. We hold immense power within us and I love how this is shown in the video through the use of all the different objects that manifest around me and eventually, through me... I often think about how the world is ultimately all energy and that we are creators of that energy everyday.
“It is so special to have made this video with two of my close friends from New Zealand who now live in Berlin. I've always enjoyed using videos as a platform to showcase the talents of my friends and this video is a true artistic triumph and testament to their creativity and commitment to making beautiful art.”
