Music News - Julie Lamb Band with The Spines

Julie Lamb Band with The Spines

24 July 2015 - 0 Comments

Two of Wellington’s inveterate originals bands - the Julie Lamb Band and The Spines – will perform at the Fringe Bar in Allen Street on 31 July.

Friends and fellow musicians for decades, Julie Lamb and Spines front man Jon McLeary have collaborated and performed together but this is the first time these two bands have shared a full gig.

The Spines is truly one of Wellington’s longest serving stalwarts. Formed by front man, guitarist and lead vocalist Jon Mcleary in 1981 they have remained in constant demand for over three decades with their experimental, folk hippie-punk fusion music. A prolific songwriter (and author, columnist, artist), Jon’s compositions are stunning, eclectic and clever yet resonate with a wide audience.

The Julie Lamb Band has long admired Jon McLeary's music to the extent that Julie’s first album Most and Least (2008) includes two of his songs and he wrote the punk-inspired A Little Shut Eye which is included on her latest Album When We Hang Out (2014).

The standout 11-piece Julie Lamb Band is one of a kind in the Wellington music scene. Julie Lamb is an award winning, charting composer and arranger with three albums to her name, a newly released single and more songs in the making. Gliding between rock, funk, blues and back again, she puts lyrical twists to earworm melodies that stay true to her 70s style vibe. Her arrangements are painstakingly crafted; her songs clever, intelligent, impassioned and punctuated with humour and light.

July also sees the release of Julie’s latest single, Why Do I Forget? a haunting and heartfelt lament. She will perform this at the Fringe Bar and showcase a brand new song Mind Flit. Both are co-written with Julie Lamb Band drummer Andrew Richardson, bassist Callum Hazlitt-Black and guitarist Dave Hadley who continue to collaborate with Julie on new work.

Sometimes likened to a 747, what sets this band apart, aside from the seriously talented musicians, is its size. The core band is augmented by percussion, trombone, saxophone, keyboards and three backing vocalists which together bring depth, power and complexity to the songs while retaining their popular appeal.
