REGENT, Auckland - When you are a nu-metal outfit following Limp Bizkit, Pantera and Linkin Park to New Zealand, you're going to have to pull one out of the bag to win over the critical youth.
San Diego four-piece POD (Payable on Death), would run the risk of coming off as yet another Ozzfest early-slot filler were it not for their original fusion of reggae, hip-hop and metal. This Christian band preoccupied with Jah and getting by in life deliver love and inspiration, not vitriol and anger.
Against the loungey surrounds of a de-nuded Regent, POD unleashed deep drum beats, heavy guitar riffs and rapping, accompanying it with trademark aggressive stage-play.
Standout tracks Alive, Satellite and Youth of the Nation had the venue pumping but the choir, violins and samples didn't translate live and the reggae injections were sparse.
A revelation was West Auckland support act Blindspott. A little polishing and Blindspott could hold their own on any metal stage.
