Two Cartoons unveil frenetic new single Males

Debut album Happiness Is Trouble out 2016

"Outwardly joyous – think surf pop, chiming 60s guitars, snappy new wave vocals...an enthralling introduction." – Clash "Oozes playfulness...incredibly fun." - The 405

"Strong on melody with a summery festival vibe permeating. Great!" - Record of the Day

Two Cartoons have revealed their new single Males - lifted from their forthcoming debut album Happiness Is Trouble out early 2016. The track premiered on The Music Ninja this past Monday (28/9/2015), and can be streamed here.

This new single sees the band breaching new musical territory, offering up a rounder, more mature, and fuller sound. Males frenetically illustrates the duo's last few weeks in New Zealand before their move to London. Acutely self-aware, the track criticises the often fulfilled stereotype of the aggressive and misguided man that parades the nightlife scene in every city. The song discusses how the band fear they are seen as more of these "monsters"; explaining how they ‘never leave home’ and wonder how their female friends can bear to do so with the promise of harassment always lingering close.

Stone-age garage rock, simple song writing and catchy vocals; with their youthful exuberance Two Cartoons have always revelled in their live performances. Since 2012 they’ve been taking their mix of high energy music and comedic interplay wherever they can, from stages, to drunken house parties - and the occasional boat.

The Kiwi duo have had a strong year with the release of their singles Horizon Approaching, Lost Boys Club and Dreams. This material has seen support from Steve Lamacq at BBC 6 Music, coverage on the likes of Clash, The 405, and more - as well being included in Spotify's 'New Music Tuesday' playlist and SoundCloud's explore section. 'Horizon Approaching' has seen over 700,000 plays on Spotify and more than 90,000 plays on Soundcloud while also charting across New Zealand alternative radio.

Following the release of their third EP, Lost Boys Club, co-writers Isaac McFarlane and Brad Craig turned their attention away from indie-tinged pop music to a driving guitar based sound that was more reflective of their energetic live shows and began work on a debut full length record. "We were listening to a lot of guitar bands just like we had when we first started Two Cartoons, so this album is very full-circle for us". The new work focuses on a full-band sound, instead of their classic two piece live set up – giving a much more mature and atmospheric tone (leading the band to recruit Dom Jones for live bass duties). Written primarily in East London’s Hackney Wick, many of the songs focus on the community there and reflect the characters, relationships and situations that Brad and Isaac experience.
