Interest in NZ artists attending the world’s biggest music showcase next week in the States is high.
On Monday five NZ acts leave for the prestigious South by Southwest 2004 (SXSW 04) music convention in Austin, Texas to showcase their music to over 20,000 influential delegates from around the world.
They are Pluto, The Have, The Coolies, Neil Hannan, Little Thief and Meterman. The NZ contingent will be amongst more than 1000 bands attending the trade show and showcase convention, which has been running since 1987. Big name success stories like Norah Jones, the Darkness, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Strokes and the White Stripes have all emerged from SXSW.
As well as playing their showcases at SXSW 04, the NZ bands will participate in the trade show, where they can make contacts and create business opportunities with the international music industry. For the second year running, the NZMIC is supporting the NZ delegation with promotional material and providing the NZ stand at the tradeshow.
Last year, the NZ contingent - who’s delegates included Damien Binder, Goodshirt, betchadupa, 8 foot Sativa, the D4 and the Hon. Judith Tizard - made a great impression. Because of the relationships developed in 2003, the SXSW organisers are assisting with the official NZ function, which follows the SXSW 04 international reception on opening night (17/04), a clear indication of their enthusiasm.
“This is the best possible way for us to start a week of networking and making contacts,” says NZMIC CEO Cath Andersen. “We’re really appreciative of the support shown to us by all the people at SXSW.”
“After the success of last year, we can really build on existing relationships and further capture the worlds interest in NZ music.”
As well as their SXSW 04 appearances the Have and Pluto have secured a show at ‘The Gig” on Melrose Ave in Hollywood, LA next Tuesday (16/04), the day prior to SXSW 04 officially opening. The A&R Network in LA is presenting the showcase with confirmation industry record company and publishing heavy weights are attending.
“Its very exciting for us to get this level of interest in the bands already,” says Pluto manager, Grant Hislop.
The idea of putting a show together has been completely well received,” says the Have manager, Teresa Patterson.
The Coolies have also confirmed an additional showcase with recent visitors to NZ with the White Stripes, Whirlwind Heat (US) at SXSW. After SXSW the Coolies will travel to San Francisco and LA for further shows.
