After a nine year hiatus Ill Semantics are excited to burst back onto the New Zealand Hip Hop scene with the release of their third studio album, Trillogy, out via Illegal Musik on November 27.
Formed in 1993, Ill Semantics consists of MCs Patriarch and Nemesis, and DMC & ITF DJ Champ DJ CXL. Ill Semantics have cemented themselves over the years as one of the most authentic and pure Hip Hop acts to emerge from New Zealand.
Ill Semantics have been on a break since 2007 when Patriarch a.k.a Mark Arona founded Illegal Musik. The label and artist development program has – thanks to like-minded friends Eddie Bennet & Inoke Finau (Nox) – helped to unearth and nurture some great musical talent in the likes of J Williams, K.One, Brooke Duff and Tomorrow People.
It has been a long journey from humble beginnings to the release of Trillogy, but according to Patriarch it has been a massive labour of love, “We do it for the love of music, and being able to help talented artist's on their journey also, has been a true blessing” he says.
The origins of the title Trillogy not only stem from having three members in the group (Nemesis, DJ CXL and Patriarch) or the fact it is their third album. Trillogy has a deeper meaning as within Hip Hop the word ‘Trill’ stands for ‘True’ and ‘Real’. Both of which are words associated with the trio when people talk of Ill Semantics.
Alongside the release of the album is the latest single, Musik. The feel good song is all about the love that one has for music and how music can be the one thing that keeps many people strong and blessed. Musik features the soulful vocals of Grace Ikenasio, a top 10 finalist in X Factor NZ season one, as well as veteran MC K.D (Kilo Delta), from pioneering hip-hop group The Lost Tribe.
Trillogy host a barrage of features from veteran MC's and rising stars, including Scribe, Mareko, K.One, Sikeone (The Doqument), Tyna, J.B, Nikki Montana, Madis, KD (Lost Tribe) Giant Killa, Sir T, Ashely Hughes, Flows (Foot Souljahs) and more.
Pre-order Trillogy from iTunes now.
