The last weekend in May is going to be massive, as TV2 screens the 24-hour music event, NATIONAL ANTHEM, live from venues in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.
Commencing at 7pm on Saturday May 29, and concluding 24 hours later on Sunday May 30, NATIONAL ANTHEM is a celebration of New Zealand music, with live performances and interviews from top acts throughout the country – including Dave Dobbyn, Nesian Mystik, Zed, Goldenhorse, Peter Urlich, Dawn Raid and The Chills, among many more.
NATIONAL ANTHEM will also help raise funds for the Play It Strange Charitable Trust. Play it Strange, founded by Mike Chunn (former Director of NZ Operations for APRA), encourages young New Zealanders to make and experiment in their own music through mentoring and participatory programmes.
All four NATIONAL ANTHEM venues will be open to the public – giving everyone the opportunity to experience this unique event, and catch some of New Zealand’s finest musicians live.
According to TVNZ Assistant CEO and Head of Content, Stephen Smith, NATIONAL ANTHEM is the most substantial music television event in recent times, if ever, on TV2.
“We are experiencing a renaissance in New Zealand music production and performance. NATIONAL ANTHEM will present the widest possible selection of new, established and emerging local talent to the audience.”
“With May being New Zealand Music Month, we thought it would be appropriate to go out with a huge event,” adds Tony Holden, TVNZ’s General Manager of Commissioning and Production.
“NATIONAL ANTHEM will give Play it Strange a significant launch-pad for the future, and ties in with TVNZ’s strategy for featuring New Zealand music on air.”
Chief Executive of NZ On Air, Jo Tyndall agrees; “NATIONAL ANTHEM creates a synergy of New Zealand music on screen with the growing popularity of New Zealand music on radio.
“NZ On Air’s strategy to take our musicians ‘from bedroom to billboard’ – helping to support performance and airplay - is also a fantastic fit with the goals of the Play It Strange Charitable Trust.
“The timing is excellent. New Zealand music has been on a roll for the last few years and there is now a wealth of talent out there that means we can produce an indigenous music event like NATIONAL ANTHEM.”
Celebrating young people making music, and helping to raise funds for the Play it Strange charitable trust, NATIONAL ANTHEM will be a landmark music event like no other – live from across the country and only on TV2.
