What started as a week long push to get more NZ music on the radio, has now turned into a month long celebration of the talent, strength and diversity that is NZ music.
NZ Music week, as it was in 1997 - an initiative of the Kiwi Action Group, a collaboration of NZ on Air, APRA, the Radio Broadcasters Association and the Recording Industry Association - focused exclusively on commercial radio.
By 1999 interest and involvement with NZ Music Week was growing and the target logo was launched. In 2001 the New Zealand Music Industry Commission became involved and the week-long focus became a month.
Three years on and NZ Music Month keeps growing with commitment not only from radio and television, but all media, music retailers, venues, schools and universities. May has become the most high profile time of the year to celebrate New Zealand music with artists launching albums, touring and enjoying success on radio and television and across different media.
Last year was the most successful yet, with a record 23 per cent local quota reached on radio. This year, with your support, New Zealand Music Month is going to be even bigger, greener and better. Go to a gig, buy some music, watch NZ artists on TV or hear them on the radio.
Celebrate NZ Music this May.
