Music News - NZ On Air Grants Announced

22 February 2002 - 0 Comments

Here are the latest funding decisions from NZ On Air:

Music Videos
A tough round, this one - 77 applications of which 34 were close contenders. But we only have the budget to do about 16 projects.

In the end, we will do 17 projects. Each project will get $5,000 to make a music video. Decisions are based on airplay potential after testing the songs with music video broadcasters.

* Antenna Recordings with Tadpole - 'Now Today Forever'
* Blast Records with En Masse - 'Crazy Baby'
* EMI Music with Tim Finn - 'I'll Never Know'
* Heavy Jones with Heavy Jones Trio -'Staring At The Ocean'
* Exit with Exit - 'Alive'
* Kog Transmissions with Epsilon Blue - 'You Are A Star'
* Mai Music with Wordperfect - 'The Wordperfect Show'
* Shock Records with Kitsch '11/11'
* Sony Music with Stellar - 'Star'
* Sony Music with Bic Runga - 'Get Some Sleep'
* Sony Music with Augustino - 'Captain Zero'
* Soulfire Entertainment with Hannah Donald - 'Thinking Of You'
* The Unusuals with The Unusuals - 'Have A Heart'
* Universal Music with K'Lee - 'Can You Feel Me?'
* Welsford Productions with Eight - 'Crash'
* Wildside Records with Rubicon - 'Happy Song'
* Zany Productions with Stoods - 'Portrait'

New Recordings
Another 8 new recording projects out of a field of 113 applications. Each project will get $5,000 to record a song for radio. Decisions are based on commercial radio airplay potential, using commercial radio expertise and experience and testing the songs with commercial radio programmers.

* '274' by Hilt (Independent)
* 'What Do You Want From Me' by Letesha (Independent)
* 'Stay Awake' by Mighty Scoop (Independent)
* 'Sound Selector' by Nesian Mystik (Bounce Records)
* 'Clav Dub' by Rhombus (Moko Entertainment)
* 'Walkie Talkie Man' by Steriogram (Sumo Music)
* 'Everywhere' by Stylus (Independent)
* 'Little Angel' by Theo Va'a featuring Atilla Va'a (Independent)

Radio Hits
[based on airplay in the October/December 2001 quarter]
Just 4 Radio Hits rebates for songs that have picked up significant airplay on commercial radio in the October/December 2001 quarter. Each project will get $5,000 (or the actual cost of recording and releasing the single, whichever is the lesser). Decisions are based on analysing the airplay logs supplied to APRA by 110+ commercial radio stations.

Note that songs that have picked up significant airplay in this quarter but have already been funded via the Phase Four funding schemes (eg 1+1+1 by K'Lee; Taken by Stellar; Place To Be by goodshirt; What You've Done by Tim Finn; Nothing New by Tadpole; Nesian Style by Nesian Mystik; Communicate by the feelers; and Did You Do It All For Love? by Nurture) are not eligible.

* 'Bruce' by Rubicon (Wildside Records)
* 'Good In My Head' by Anika Moa (Warner Music)
* 'Into The Grain' by Augustino (Taylortalk Productions)
* 'Cry No More' by Aaria (BMG New Zealand)

Next funding round closes Friday March 15.
