On Sunday 15 May, the doors will be flung open and the secrets of the recording studio laid bare. The public is invited to walk through and see how the studio is made up of different sound spaces, each with their own distinct purpose.
Visitors will get to chat to Michael Bell, Orange Studios owner and director, as well as professional sound engineers who work behind the scenes to make the end product the best it can be.
“Anyone who’s had a hankering to record a song, or is just curious as to how it all works, come on in and learn how we lay down the raw tracks then mix and edit them to make the final product. For example, we’ll show you where to place microphones so the best sound is achieved, or where to put noisy instruments like drums so they don’t overwhelm the other musicians.
“And did you know that in the recording studio you can be a bit of a megalomaniac,” says Bell. “You can record the lead track then also record your own backing tracks. Or you can do what Aled Jones has recently done and record a duet with yourself! There are lots of professional secrets and tricks you can find out. So come along and get the inside story.”
“The vibe here at Orange Studios is to make recording fun and energising. We are all musicians ourselves who love making music and are passionate about what we do. And because we’re good at it, we can be creative with the recording session and let it evolve – and this is often where the magic happens. Musicians who might have been tense about their recording session, end up have the best time and coming out with a recording they are truly proud of.”
Ali Harper who recently recorded her backing tracks for her current Doris Day tribute at Orange, says Orange Studios makes what is often very hard work, as easy as possible.
“We are so lucky to have such a great recording studio here filled with such lovely people who make the whole thing fun and easy. Orange Studios did all my musical arrangements, recorded the Big Band and strings for the tracks and I even got to hold my rehearsals there! I have recorded three albums here at orange studios – so you can tell I’m a fan,” says Ms Harper.
Anyone who is interested in the tours, can book at www.orangestudio.co.nz/shows. There are two sessions: one called “The Junior Edition” (for ages 6-14yrs) beginning at 9.30am and one for adults (14+yrs) at 11am.
