West Auckland has become legendary for nurturing talented songwriters, four of which have been chosen to perform at the first Simply the West Songwriters Showcase at the Theatre, Lopdell House, Titirangi, on 25 June.
Host John Goudge sees a need to give local musicians a place to play & have their songs heard by their neighbouring community.
“That’s why I created this songwriter showcase series, & asked musos with strong links to the West to come play,” says John. “I was lucky to have so many wonderful performers apply.”
The first concert on 25 June will feature original songs from Dave Alley, Peter Fielding (pictured), Jocelyn Aydon & Paul Doesburg. A second concert on 23 July will showcase four more songwriters soon to be announced.
Internationally acclaimed Dave Alley will be well known to West Auckland audiences. He is a multi-talented guitarist & percussionist, with a style stemming from a myriad of influences, including blues & world music.
Tucked away in the trees at Titirangi, singer-songwriter Jocelyn Aydon creates songs that reflect her life in West Auckland, the people she meets on her travels, and her love of the beach and bush.
Originally from Limerick, Peter Fielding was influenced by Ireland’s reggae and ska music scene, something that rubs off on his dynamic music. Peter, a vocalist, guitarist & saxophone player, is also known as Peter the Barber in Titirangi Village.
Paul Doesburg can often be seen finger-picking his guitar at a cafe in Titirangi most weekends. A Green Bay resident of 25 years, he is known as a Southern Dreamer. His folk-tinged original songs are dreams about life and love.
