It's a rare enough occurrence that any Kiwi act makes a dent on the UK Charts...
So it is especially meritorious this week that we should find no fewer than four of them on perhaps the most followed Singles Charts in the world.
Steriogram shoot into the official UK Top 20, debuting #19 with Walkie Talkie Man, while fellow EMI-distributed act The Finn Brothers debut at #31 with Nothing Wrong With You this week. And although some would not consider him a local boy, New Zealand-born Daniel Bedingfield is also in there at #23 (down from #12 last week) with Nothing Hurts Like Love.
Meanwhile on the UK Dance Chart, Kiwi DJ Greg Churchill is flying the NZ flag (which only contains the Union Jack these days to make the Brits feel better about themselves) with his current hit Infused Trash/Plutonic up seven places to #32 this week.
A top 20 debut for Steriogram is especially impressive for the Auckland band as this is the boys' first release in the UK. Helped no doubt by the profile generated by its use on an Apple iPOD television campaign, Walkie Talkie Man is also the 15th most downloaded single on the UK's recently launched Official Download Chart.
For the Finn brothers, UK chart success is not such a novelty having had previous hits there with Split Enz and Crowded House. However, some are picking the pair to reach previously uncharted heights with their Everyone Is Here album if the current 'buzz' is anything to go by.
Former New Zealand radio boss Josh Easby says the Finns are about to break.
"Their just-finished tour has been a huge success, but more importantly, they are getting lots of airtime on Radio 2 which is vital in terms of album sales.
"They have just recorded a special concert for Radio 2 which includes explanations of how they wrote each song performed, and this will air sometime soon.
"I'm convinced that they are about to achieve the level of awareness that Split Enz never managed here, and not even Crowded House. Remember where you heard it first!"
