New Zealand’s only national chamber music competition for young musicians and composers celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
The New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest is the longest running youth music competition in New Zealand. It is organised by Chamber Music New Zealand and invites secondary school students to form a chamber music ensemble and experience the joys of making music together.
Entries are now being accepted for the 2005 event and New Zealand’s secondary school musicians and composers are encouraged to get involved. Entry forms have been sent to schools and music teachers around the country, and can also be downloaded from CMNZ’s website, www.chambermusic.co.nz. Entries for the competition close on Monday 21 March.
The composition section allows young composers to enter an original work suitable for a chamber music ensemble. The winner of the Composition section will receive the SOUNZ prize of $500 and have their piece performed at the National Final by a chamber music ensemble, alongside the competing groups.
Last year a record number of 533 groups entered, involving over 2000 students nationwide. CMNZ Chief Executive Brian Budd is hoping to exceed these entry numbers in 2005. “The contest is a platform for New Zealand’s young musicians to become part of the chamber music community. The contest’s appeal is that students are taken seriously as musicians and as young adults. It also gives the students first hand experience of what it takes to be a professional musician.”
Fourteen District Contests are held nationwide in June. The team of adjudicators then select up to eight groups to compete at the prestigious National Final in Auckland on Saturday 6 August.
Prizes are awarded at both the District Contests and the National Final.
Last year CMNZ established an email newsletter designed especially for contest participants, to keep them updated with CMNZ news, events and concert results. To receive regular email updates, students can email [email protected] with their school name and region.
In 2004, CMNZ welcomed the New Zealand Community Trust on board as the new funder of the contest. The New Zealand Community Trust's association with the event, which is now known as the New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest, was effective from the National Final in July last year.
The New Zealand Community Trust is a non-profit organisation established in 1998. The Trust distributes an excess of $40 million each year to cultural, sporting, educational, health and community groups throughout New Zealand.
