“Highly theatrical,
they veer from weird to touching and back again.
Grown-up entertainment in
the best, most infantile way.
Don’t miss an opportunity
to see them”
DAILY TELEGRAPH, UK
Darlings of the folk festival circuit, The Spooky Men’s Chorale, are coming back to New Zealand for the first time since 2012 after amazing audiences with their genre-bending acapella at festivals and shows worldwide.
In March, the half serious men’s choir and half choral pranksters will tour
from Auckland to Christchurch and everywhere in between taking their
captivating combination of Visigothic bravado, absurdist humour, and
eye-moistening tenderness to kiwi stages.
Based on the twin pillars of grand foolishness and the quest for the perfect
subwoofer-rattling boofchord (a chord you’ll only know once you hear it), the
Spooky Men use their voices, a twinkle in the eye, and 15 really good hatsto commentate on the absurdity and grandeur of the modern male.
Musical Director, Founder, and Spookermeister-in-Chief, Stephen Taberner, is
Christchurch-born and looking forward to bringing the laughter, tears, and
merriment to New Zealand again: “We’re
kind of aiming to be boofy enough to take over a pub, stupid enough for a
comedy festival, and reverent and beautiful enough to evoke tears….but I guess
the audience has to be the best judge of whether we succeed…”
Each show promises to be a dizzying cornucopia of musical adventures, all in
the name of both ennobling and ridiculing the paradoxes of man-ness.
Their catalogue, which began in 2001 with a simple combination of Georgian
table songs, immaculate ballads and tawdry anthems like Don't Stand Between A Man And His Tool, has since expanded to include sly and witty commentary
on their own favourite body parts and a mock Sufi ode to the BeeGees. New
Zealanders also might recognize Spooky
Theme Songfrom the Speight’s Summit ‘Man Like Natural’ ad.
In their 18th year, and with six studio albums under their belt, the
Spookies are a vast, rumbling, steam powered and black clad vocal behemoth.
From disco to dervish; from renaissance to rock ‘n’ roll; from gospel to
goodness knows what; the Spooky Men’s Chorale will take New Zealand on a
song-filled rollercoaster ride of fun for the whole family!
