Congratulations to Tomorrow People,
whose new EP BBQ Reggae debuted at #1 in the Official NZ Music Charts on Friday.
The Wellington collective released their EP exclusively at the One Love Festival on
January 27, before its official digital release on January 29.
Tomorrow People (made up of
Marcus Abraham, Ken Saupese, Hamo Dell, Avina Kelekolio, Duane Te Whetu, Dan
Sugrue and Tana Tupai) are one of New Zealand’s most-loved reggae bands, known
for their unique ‘sunshine reggae’ sound.
The EP title,
BBQ Reggae, is a
tongue-and-cheek reference to a controversial article that was published a few
years ago.
"Our music was once labelled
BBQ Reggae in kind of a negative way,” says
the band. “But Kiwis love a good BBQ and we are absolutely thrilled to
represent the reggae community in hitting number one with this EP. It’s a clear
sign that this genre is a big part of Kiwi culture."
The eight-track EP includes the lead single
Lock Me Up, which was played on Top 40
radio and is currently in NZ’s Top 100 airplay chart and the urban chart. It
also includes the current single
Don’t
Wanna Fight It - watch the video
here - which Tomorrow
People released in English, Te Reo Māori and Samoan, as a nod
to the cultural diversity of the band and their fans.
