Auckland alt/psych/rock trio
The Roulettes make a rare appearance in the capital, playing
Meow, Saturday 19th May. They will be joined by Wellington’s post-rock shoe-gazers Kosmo-0.
The Roulettes’ latest release, the 8 track EP
Venus Burns, received a rave review on RNZ from Grant Smithies, who nearly ran out of breath (and superlatives) in the process. He singled out the track
Dogs as a fave, calling it a “perfect pop song... raw, hectic and thrilling, an inspired confluence of careering riffs and shiny melody that sticks in your head as tight as any filling.”
Smithies went on to declare that the title track,
Venus Burns (in the Blue Above) was “a bit like The Beatles being covered by early Straitjacket Fits”.
And of the band, he declared “The playing is razor-sharp in these songs, with the rhythm section punchy and nimble beneath McLean’s terse, clanging guitar. But it’s the vocals that seal the deal…”
So if you love high energy, post-punk, post-pop, clanging, jangling guitar and chiming pop tunes, The Roulettes are quite probably right up your alley. They will most certainly be in your neighbourhood, for one night only, so head down to
Meow, Saturday 19th May.
