NZTrio is delighted to
announce its 2018 programme which offers Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington
audiences a fine selection of concerts that embrace new commissions, female
composers and thrilling explorations of the classical canon in June, September
and November.
For the 2018 programme deep connections are woven through each concert and
across the series. Familial, romantic, and collegial relationships are revealed
among the Mendelssohns, the Schumanns, and Brahms. Stylistic nuances across the
decades appear among Kiwi composers – Buchanan, Kelly, and Oram, and Aussies
Greenbaum, Kats-Chernin, and Hindson – allowing for comparisons of styles from
either side of the Tasman. The concerts open with a sense of strength and
fragility referenced by Clement and Glass, and there’s a celebration of New
Zealand’s suffragettes in the central concert of all female composers.
Each concert presents a fresh dynamic, with an impressive line-up of talented
Kiwi guest musos – Natalie Lin, Benjamin Baker, and Amalia Hall (violin) and
Stephen De Pledge and Somi Kim (piano) – arriving from all corners of the globe
to join Ashley Brown (cello) in exhilarating NZTrio combinations every time.
The programme features three concerts:
WEAVEGLASS • MENDELSSOHN • GREENBAUM • BUCHANAN • SCHUMANN
Ashley Brown (cello) with guest musicians Natalie Lin (violin) and Somi Kim
(piano)
The first in the 2018 series,
Weaveintroduces an aural tapestry rich in colour and texture. The structuralist
sensibility of Philip
Glass(USA) and ordered tonality of Felix
Mendelssohn(GER) provide a framework for the more fluid and silky soundworlds of Stuart
Greenbaum (AUS) and
Dorothy
Buchanan(NZ), before the flat-out emotional turbulence of Robert
Schumann (GER)
closes the loop.
BRAIDCLEMENT • MENDELSSOHN • KATS-CHERNIN • KELLY • SCHUMANN
Ashley Brown (cello) with guest musicians Benjamin Baker (violin) and Stephen
De Pledge (piano)
In recognition of the 125
th anniversary celebration for women’s
suffrage in New Zealand,
Braid unleashes
an all-female cast of composers. These remarkable women are represented in
this powerful tribute by a perfect tangle of traits - enigma in the
Clement (NZ),
protective embrace in the
Kelly (NZ),
enduring strength in the
Kats-Chernin (AUS),
compassion in the
Schumann (GER)
and emotional wisdom in the
Mendelssohn (GER).
TWINEGLASS • SCHUMANN • HINDSON • ORAM • BRAHMS
Ashley Brown (cello) with guest musicians Amalia Hall (violin) and Somi Kim
(piano)
In the finale of the series,
Twine knits together the linear sway from Philip
Glass (USA) and the
refreshing new pluck and spin from Matthew
Hindson (AUS), with a new commission from
Celeste
Oram(NZ). Robert
Schumann(GER) and Johannes
Brahms(GER) deliver lashings of romantic sentimentality, outpourings from their lives
entwined.
