Fade, the fourth single off
Mermaidens'
Taite Prize
nominated album
Perfect
Body is released today, accompanied by a slow moving, moody
music video, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Julian Vares and the band's longtime
collaborator Ezra
Simons, the music video for
Fade is a mature visual development
for Mermaidens.
Mermaidens are a three-piece outfit from Wellington, who are renowned for their intricate and unique songwriting, boldly
raw but increasingly refined studio production, and a hypnotic live synergy
that leaves audiences enchanted.
Their
entrance onto the NZ music scene was extremely strong following the releases of
their widely acclaimed debut EP
O in
2014 and subsequent album
Undergrowth in
2016. As a result, they were offered dozens of national shows and international
support slots, which led to them being picked up by Flying Nun Records,
who released the band’s first international album,
Perfect Body last
year.
Filmed late on a Saturday night at Freyberg Pool on Wellington's Oriental
Parade, the video features award-winning choreographer and dancer Zahra Killeen-Chance.
The iconic 1960's building provided the perfect setting for Zahra's
disjointed and expressive movements. The band, made up of Gussie Larkin, Lily West and Abe Hollingsworthare shown performing somewhat introspectively, in an empty, dimly room.
Gussiedescribes the song as;
"An
intimate look at sacrifices and promises we make to someone we're truly
entranced by. It's the moment of surrender to another in the middle of a
deserted, smokey dancefloor".
