Wellington alternative-soul group Sky Canvas release their new single Fossil.
Atmospheric synth textures and gliding guitar melodies intertwine with strong female vocals in this absorbing new track. Fossil explores the link between something that is created in the present, and how that creation becomes a relic of knowledge and inspiration in the future. Bass/Sax player Tyaan says: “It could be a work of art, scientific discovery - any form that we can use to influence and inspire beyond our own lives”. The song features emotive, swirling sonic textures and twists of form, reflecting a sound that has been described as "reminiscent of Hiatus Kaiyote, Emily King and Robert Glasper" - NZ Musician.
The release of this single is an exciting step forward thematically for the group following their debut EP in October of last year and is a tantalising insight into the kind of driving force they’ve got behind them heading into the creation of their debut album in 2019.
Sky Canvas was born in 2017 out of Wellington’s jazz school, drawing from the band’s shared love of intricate textures and deep-set grooves. If their sold out hometown shows are anything to go by, the melodic, radiant sound of their latest track Fossil is worth dipping your ears into!
“If you’re into grooves, jazzy guitar, spacey keys, powerful female vocals, and a couple more grooves, look no further than Sky Canvas.. last years Sky Canvas EP was an absolute belter of a debut by a group of Kiwis with musical talent to burn” - Tearaway
“Kaleidoscopic, futuristic & soulful” - the audience.co.nz.
Fossil was recorded at Surgery Studios in Wellington with Lee Prebble, mixed by Benny Tones, and mastered at Metropolis Studios in London.
