Max Jax Relax may be the new kids on the block, but they certainly have a lot to offer.
Releasing their self-titled debut EP, Max Jax Relax blends elements of trap, hip hop, rap and a drop of jazz together to discover a new type of music you want to dim the lights, close your eyes and soak in the sultry feel it brings.
Influenced from bands such as Massive Attack, Gorillaz, Gramatik and Home Brew, their debut tracks Still Here and Lie to Me seamlessly create a sensation of rhythm which lingers to the touch, leaving you nodding your head even after the music has stopped. Comprising of three members who coincided at Massey University. They create this unique blend of music from their separate musical palettes originating from Napier, Nelson and Whangarei, colliding together to create Max Jax Relax.
Max ‘Max’ McAlpine, from Nelson - New Zealand, brings to the table an experience of jazz melodies and chordal structures alongside avant garde percussive sounds to glue the entirety of the band together. With Max, comes Jackson ‘Jax’ Plumpton from Napier - New Zealand, bringing thoughtfully catching keyboard and vocal melodies with an American pop punk style into the band. Robbie ‘Relax’ Mulligan brings ideas of Blues, Rock and Dub into the mix. Jumping on the bass, guitar and vocals on these few songs he is both the rock which grounds the music as well as the sprinkle of soul which adds that little extra on top of Max Jax Relax.
Max Jax Relax with their debut tracks Still Here and Lie to Me are out now on Bandcamp and YouTube. You can also catch them live on the Q+A tour, with Cold Sweat, playing at Valhalla, Wellington on October 23rd; Zeal, Kapiti Coast on October 25th; and Massey University, Wellington on October 27th.
