The North Shore band from Rangitoto College in Mairangi Bay also placed an impressive second in the Smokefreerockquest finals, held in the Wellington Town Hall on Saturday night. Supported by their friends and families who drove down to Wellington in a van, designed a small run of their own T-shirts and greeted the band at the arrival terminal of Wellington airport.
The judges (singer-songwriter Anika Moa; Willy McAlistair from The Edge; Tania Deans from New Zealand on Air; Matt Headland from Warner Music; and LA-based Kiwi producer Malcolm Wellsford) were impressed by The Midnight Youth’s stage image, performance and songwriting skills. The Best Song award nets them a prize to the value of $500.
The Midnight Youth also won vouchers for musical equipment worth $5000 from NZ Rock Shops for being the competition's runner-up band, and will have the costs of recording their prize-winning best song, “Home” covered by the organisers.
In a very close final, The Midnight Youth’s friends, The Electric Confectionaires - a teenage school band that draws on 1960s rock 'n' roll and barbershop harmonies - was named the Smokefreerockquest winner. “The Electric Confectionaires is a great act and we wish them all the best," says The Midnight Youth’s guitarist, Simon Oscroft.
"We'd like to thank the judges for deliberating so carefully and the Smokefreerockquest organisers for staging such a hard-won competition. It was a close-run thing, and The Electric Confectionaires deserved to win. For The Midnight Youth, this is just the beginning. Showcasing great songs is hugely important to us. Winning the Best Song Award takes The Midnight Youth up to the next rung on the ladder."
The Midnight Youth plans to take the opportunity to upgrade its instruments, do some more recording and further hone their songwriting skills.
