Kiwi garage rock outfit Spawts announce their debut album AV1, and share the music video for Heresy, created by Far Side Key.
Heresy is the second single from post punk, garage rock outfit Spawts upcoming album AV1. An album written “for live”, captures the full force of the band’s energy on stage and the frenetic angst of the new record, due for release on July 26.

Written in the living room of a Mt Wellington flat, AV1 is a product of ideals clashing with environment.
A feeling of isolation and anxiety, stemming from playing and writing in a cold, mouldy flat, permeates the thick guitars and loud rhythm sections of Spawts’ post-punk based sound. The sense of being slightly removed from even their own beloved scene on K Road found Jamie and Kieran reaching consciously to St Kevins arcade, and in particular the venues underground there, as a touchstone for their sound, and how it should come across both recorded and live.
“In retrospect, it sounds like when you walk in half way through the second act and your spilling your gin trying to get to the far corner and you can hear some tasteful fuzz coming from the system. A lot of these songs are that fuzz.”
Having decided on recording in a relaxed environment in Waiuku, it seemed a suitably isolated place to piece things together and craft a record with care. Brick by brick, the record fell into place, and was engineered by Nick Moyle and Edward Castelow. Mixing and mastering was provided by Stephen John Marr.
