The Undercurrents Take All.
There were 53 bands on the war-ground of talent – The Undercurrents conquered them all. They are champions of Dux-de-Lux RounDUp 2005. They have earned an estimated $15,000 worth of prizes including recording time, CD pressing, a complete publicity machine and a slot at the Dux de Lux New Years party. But more significantly, their name on the trophy: “The Midget Guitar of Glory”.
Other finalists were The New Originals, Orkid, House of Dolls and Happy Palace, - certainly, the most ferocious competitors in Christchurch music.
Judges were gathered from the breadth of the industry – Ben Howe (Arch Hill Records), Kaye Woodward (The Bats, Minisnap), Steve Newall (NZMIC), Tristan Roake (2005 Heineken Found @ Thirst NZ Champ) and hat (RDU Station Manager).
While each band performed with a wild intensity, the judges were drawn to The Undercurrents and their mellow indie guitar pop – which one judge referred to as “songs in the key of suicide”.
The Dux de Lux Tavern looked slightly like a Colosseum, as the swelling crowd, including the Mayor of Christchurch, devoured band after band. Finally, the Jim Beam girls pranced like cheerleaders and the judges retired to the tribal council room. But the result was not clear until the final vote was drawn. The Undercurrents were collectively ecstatic, and the confetti flew. The Midget Guitar of Glory was held high.
Now the true battle begins for The Undercurrents. In 6 weeks, their first single will be released, with performances at Real Groovy, and the Dux-de-Lux.
