New Zealand radio lost one of its true characters, though one who remained behind the scenes for the vast proportion of his career, with the death late last week of RadioWorks Head of Engineering John Haynes.
Easily recognisable by his big beard and jandals, 49-year-old Haynes was much-respected by his colleagues and contemporaries throughout the radio industry. His technical knowledge and expertise made him a key figure in the CanWest culture, and the 'go to' guy for many a radio staffer needing technical assistance.
His intimate knowledge of the practicalities of radio operations was rivalled only by his sense of humour and approachability, even when under pressure.
CanWest CEO Brent Impey describes him as a unique person.
"He was an integral part of our company and it's culture, turning up everyday in his Radio Pacific sweatshirt and always jandals. He established so many things in the company, most recently the roll-out of Radio Live. He made a selfless contribution to everything he did.
"John was a very unique person in our company at a management level, for his quality of thinking and for looking at things from a different angle. The tragedy is that he was just starting work on international stuff and died on his way back from Turkey (he had been checking out stations for CanWest International), and doing things he'd never dreamed of doing.
"He also did an incredible job bringing up his kids on his own. His loss will be felt by everybody who knew him."
