With summer raising her head to reveal fine skies and high temperatures, it’s time to lift the lid on the third and final round of additions to the BIG DAY OUT 2006 guest list. It’s going to be some party!
The Sydney show sold out in record time, and ticket sales on our side of the Tasman have been going strong. We have a fantastic new feature in the Boost Mobile Local Produce stage, set to showcase a variety of NZ artists. And there are more surprises to come!
BIG DAY OUT 2006 will be the music event of the summer, demonstrating true value for money with upwards of sixty bands on the bill - we know you’ll want to be part of it. Below you’ll find the third round of acts to take the stage at Ericsson. We’ll see you there!
Give it up for SAVAGE AND THE DECEPTIKONZ! With a commanding presence and a sound that demands attention, the founding member of New Zealand’s premier hip hop crew SAVAGE barely requires an introduction. Having notched up gold and platinum recognition for his work on classic local hip-hop releases from both Scribe and Mareko, SAVAGE has made waves in his own right with his debut album Moonshine featuring the hit single of the same name – number one here and top ten in Australia – as well as the irresistible ‘Swing’ and latest hit ‘They Don’t Know’. Backed by THE DECEPTIKONZ, you’d best be up front and representing with your hands in the air for this unmissable set.
Fresh from another round of accolades at this year’s Vodafone Music Awards, P-MONEY returns to Ericsson for BIG DAY OUT 2006. Widely accepted as New Zealand’s finest hip-hop producer, P-MONEY aka Pete Wadams was named Best Male Solo Artist and his 2004 release Magic City was lauded as Best Urban Hip-Hop Album. P-MONEY is much respected for his production work on most of the top local hip-hop releases including Scribe’s multi-platinum debut The Crusader, and he’s also amongst the world’s best DJs, having taken third place at the prestigious DMC World DJ Championships. He’s set the bar high and he’s taking you with him – see P-MONEY live this January.
Much touted for their impressive overseas successes, STERIOGRAM are the embodiment of the manic live show. After forming in 1999 as a melodic rock four-piece, frontman Tyson soon developed his trademark rap vocal style as the band built up a loyal local following. Single ‘White Trash’ catapulted the band into the national spotlight and before you can say ‘Quit your day job!’ the band had signed a deal with major label Capitol Records leading to the release of Schmack! in 2004. STERIOGRAM’s punk-pop meets white hip-hop sound is an energetic must-see crowd-pleaser.
Where others condone the rebirth of the stripped back sound of rock n roll, GRAMSCI have gone the other way and moved ever closer to perfection with each album released. They’ve been honing their sound since their first release in 2003 and new album Like Stray Voltage lays down a definite statement of intent, with a well-balanced swing between majestic rock ballads and open-throttle sonic assaults. Experienced live, GRAMSCI’s sound is like nothing you’ve ever heard – startling in its originality and drawing on a myriad of influences fashioned into music that is both elegant and brutal. Don’t miss their first outing at the BIG DAY OUT.
Having garnered international attention with vinyl releases and compilation appearances on prominent labels such as Guidance and Ministry of Sound, SOLA ROSA recently raised the bar further still with his third album release Moves On. As the title suggests, the artist aka Andrew Spraggon has moved on from a solo personification to include a highly-experienced top-shelf band – tight as the proverbial drum - that includes Will Scott, Matt Short and Ned Ngatae. Another first-timer for the BIG DAY OUT lineup, SOLA ROSA bring their superbly eclectic sound embracing a smorgasbord of influences spanning jazz, dub and more, striking a perfect balance between hectic and mellow.
From loud and proud beginnings as the fictional house band for the low-budget New Zealand tv show 'Back of the Y Masterpiece Television', DEJA VOODOO have been gaining momentum ever since they mastered the art of fine lyricism and intricate power chords. As the public’s horror begrudgingly turned to adulation, this hard working no thrills rock four piece have actually gotten quite good and now sell out gigs around the country. If you’ve not yet experienced the power and emotion of ‘Today, Tomorrow, Timaru’, you’ve not yet lived – be sure to see DEJA VOODOO at this year’s BIG DAY OUT.
It’s no exaggeration to call DIE! DIE! DIE! New Zealand’s hardest working band – in the 18 months since their formation, they’ve taken their abrasive yet catchy brand of fast and loud art rock across New Zealand no less than six times, as well as touring Australia five times and visits to the US and England as well. Their self-titled album was recorded in Chicago with studio legend Steve Albini and mastered at Abbey Road by Steve Rooke (Franz Frerdinand, Paul McCartney). With influences juxtaposing local treasures the Skeptics, Dead C and The Gordons and international acts Joy Division, Minor Threat and Black Flag, DIE! DIE! DIE! are all about the live show and they’re bound to be at their best for BIG DAY OUT.
The CITY NEWTON BOMBERS hail from the inner Auckland City suburb of Newton, where Symonds St and Karangahape Rd are called home. They have created quite a stir on the Auckland live scene, with shows that could be simply described as a sharp kick to the head. Individually, the band share a rich history in New Zealand music, with links to a spectrum of local acts including The Chills, Upper Hutt Posse, the Peter Stuyvesant Hit List, Bike, and the Hallelujah Picassos. With a strong social conscience and a tight live act, the intensity of the CITY NEWTON BOMBERS will leave you dazed and impressed.
After Dave Mulcahy closed up his band Superette, he continued to write his fantastic trademark uber-pop songs. Now he's back with a new band and RAYGUNN is the result. In the game of musical chairs that often characterises the New Zealand music scene, Dave has ended up with a group that has a great song writing and playing pedigree, boasting a history including The Tufnels, Solid Gold Hell and Spud amongst others. BIG DAY OUT welcomes RAYGUNN to the fold – don’t miss their mixture of melody, noise and weirdness.
Quirky, original and full of surprises, four-piece THE ELECTRIC CONFECTIONAIRES hail from Auckland’s North Shore, and their energetic dance-friendly sound has the 60s and 70s feelgood factor of the Beatles, the Doors, the Kinks and the Funk Brothers. In September 2005 they wrested the national high school Smokefree Rockquest title from a 650-strong field dominated by mainstream rock bands, completely wowing the judges with their barbershop-garage-psychedelic-blues-surf-jazz-devonport-core. THE ELECTRIC CONFECTIONAIRES are a young band with a musicality and confidence that goes beyond their brief experience together and BIG DAY OUT welcomes them to the stage at Ericsson.
BIG DAY OUT is proud to introduce ANAHAM. These talented young Nelson rockers met at school at age 5, and formed their first band when they were 9. They have since played hundreds of gigs and have matured into one of New Zealand’s most electrifying original rock bands, with an exciting live show and an honest, hard-edged and melodic sound. The band recently received a 5 star album review in Rip it up, and BIG DAY OUT welcomes them on board as the first band to play on the brand new Boost Mobile Local Produce stage.
BIG DAY OUT is pleased to introduce the new hip hop star from South Auckland: TYREE from the Smashproof crew, performing alongside JUSE, DJ for New Zealand’s hottest crossover hip-hop, funk, reggae rock and jungle band The Token Village. 20 year old TYREE has been signed to Move The Crowd Records, a label set up by New York-based New Zealander Kirk Harding and Auckland’s Woodcut Productions, and his solo album is set to drop in 2006 with distribution in Australia through Universal already secured. Keeping with the tradition of strong local hip hop, TYREE is poised to impress.
AUTOZAMM have been eating and breathing dirty rock n roll since their beginnings in late 2002, and following recent tours with Gramsci, The D4, The Have, Sommerset and Powderfinger, they’re well prepared to take the stage at Ericsson for BIG DAY OUT 2006. Released on the strength of hundreds of live shows, AUTOZAMM’s 2004 debut EP Shade of Brown displayed their talent for pop hooks and spiky rock infusions. Their 2005 full-length follow-up As For Now was captured by producer David Holmes and mastered by the infamous Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, The Cure, Beastie Boys), and it’s much like their live show shenanigans – from balls to the wall rock’n’roll to laid-back martini-induced numbers.
Busting bold musical moves from Blackpool to Auckland NZ has made DICK “MAGIK” JOHNSON a house music heavyweight in both hemispheres. His reputation for rocking a party began amidst the acid house madness of Manchester’s infamous Hacienda, and soon after he had his own room at The 5th Man, where the legendary basement sessions became a part of club history. This lead to residencies at Federation, Spice and Nottingham’s Renaissance, and JOHNSON soon started producing tracks for Cream’s Olympic label, New Order’s Pleasure Recordings and Manchester’s Paperecordings collective. His label Shaboom has since developed into one of the worlds’ most respected dance labels, with releases from artists such as UBU, Joeski & Onionz, Fred Everything, Doc Martin and DJ Sneak – catch him at BIG DAY OUT 2006 and you’ll see why.
From the ashes of some of New Zealand’s most visionary bands rises the deadliest of them all, COBRA KHAN. Milon Williams (Sommerset/Next In Line), Andy Morton (Day One/Die Madison), Ben Lee (Tempo 38), Sarah Fox and Dean Cameron (Balance/The Soul Creepers) delve into their collective past, present and future to inject their unique blend of straight-up hardcore rock'n'roll straight into your veins. Once the poison hits your blood system be prepared to dance - you have been warned!
