DAVE DOBBYN: ONE NIGHT IN MATATA is a special based around two free concerts given by Dave Dobbyn for the residents of the tiny settlement of Matata in the Bay Of Plenty, which was deluged with rivers of mud on May 18, 2005.
The story unfolds with the people of Matata opening their hearts and sharing their stories over a cup of tea to an extraordinary performer who recognised the community’s distress and wanted to help by providing some light relief through his music.
For the community of Matata it was a chance for a long overdue night of distraction and entertainment, a chance to forget the woes of the last few months and the months to come, and for the viewers at home it’s a poignant, moving and enlightening story about a small community coping with an unforeseen natural disaster, told surrounding a unique, intimate Dave Dobbyn concert.
Local Resident Tui Hunt says the concert was a highlight for the community. “Dave can call in anytime for a bbq! Everyone here really enjoyed meeting him and the concerts were awesome! He just fits in here and he means so well, for the people around here, after the disaster, we could tell he just wanted to give something back”
Dave Dobbyn posted this message after on his website after his trip to Matata.
It was a privilege to meet the brave locals and the school kids sang Loyal and Slice of Heaven - the joy of their hopefulness an inspiring sight - they make them tough in Matata and you'll be updated regularly on their plight. The light is shining in this part of the country for two huge floods within ten months have bought forth the best in many and despair in others. We need to share their load NZ. I look forward to getting to know you - Tui and the team, the brave firemen and kaumatua and the mayor. Amazing spirit in this place. God keep you Matata and make you strong and peaceful.”
DAVE DOBBYN: ONE NIGHT IN MATATA Friday 23rd December at 8.45pm on TV ONE.
