There’s a change of date for next year’s Pacific Music Awards.
The Pacific Music awards Committee has announced that in 2006 the awards will be held during New Zealand Music Month. They will take place on May 12 at the Telstra Clear Pacific venue in Manukau City.
Spokesperson and chair of the Committee, Reverend Mua Strickson-Pua says the change of date from March to May gives the event added focus.
“While the inaugural awards in 2005 were a huge success, shifting them to New Zealand Music Month gives them a higher profile during a time when music is the focus of the nation.
“We are looking forward to continuing the celebration of Pacific creativity and talent with the 2006 Pacific Music Awards and are pleased they will be a stand-alone event within New Zealand Music Month.”
Nominations for the Pacific Music Awards open in January 2006, with recordings released during the period of 1 January to 31 December 2005 being eligible for entry.
The six categories to be presented at the 2006 Pacific Music Awards are:
- Best Pacific Music Album (RIANZ Tui Award)
- Best Pacific Music Group (Pacific Music Award)
- Best Pacific Hip Hop Artist (Pacific Music Award)
- Best Pacific Male Artist (Pacific Music Award)
- Best Pacific Female Artist (Pacific Music Award)
- Best Pacific Song (Pacific Music Award)
The winner of the Best Pacific Music Album is acknowledged at the New Zealand Music Awards in October 2006. Pacific music artists can still enter the New Zealand Music Awards under any non-genre category.
Tha Feelstyle won three awards at the inaugural Pacific Music Awards in 2005 and went on to be named as a finalist in two Tui categories (Durex Urban/Hip Hop Album and Clean & Clear® Breakthrough Artist of the Year) at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.
New Zealand Music Awards spokesperson Adam Holt says RIANZ is right behind the Pacific Music Awards.
“It’s excellent the Tui award for Best Pacific Music Album is being hosted by the Pacific Music Awards. The Pacific Music Awards are a vibrant celebration of Pacific musicians and artists and RIANZ is proud to be part of the event.”
