Mushroom Music New Zealand Ltd Signs Scribe
Scribe

09 January 2006 - 0 Comments

Mushroom Music NZ Ltd has further strengthened its position as New Zealand’s leading publisher of local songwriters, signing one of the country’s highest selling artists, Scribe, on January 1, 2006.

As with all songwriters signed to Mushroom Music NZ Ltd, Scribe will enjoy the benefit of his royalties staying within New Zealand.

New Zealand artists currently signed to Australian publishing companies attract a withholding tax in both Australia and New Zealand. By signing to a New Zealand company such as Mushroom Music NZ royalties remain within the country meaning songwriters will not incur withholding tax on their local earnings.

The only publisher to have a local office in New Zealand, Mushroom Music NZ has the country’s largest catalogue of local talent. Scribe will join an extensive catalogue boasting household names such as Neil Finn, Tim Finn, Salmonella Dub, The Mint Chicks, Betchadupa, The Datsuns, Elemeno P, The Feelers, Anika Moa, Nathan Haines and King Kapisi.

Since releasing his debut album The Crusader in October 2003, Scribe has had phenomenal success both within New Zealand and abroad. He is the first NZ artist to simultaneously hold the number one spots on the NZ album and singles chart, and has achieved quadruple platinum sales in this country. In Australia he has secured platinum status with sales now in excess of 100,000, making Scribe the biggest selling NZ artist in Australia since the days of Split Enz and Crowded House.

In 2004 Scribe made a clean sweep of the Tui Awards winning Album Of The Year, Single Of The Year, People’s Choice, Songwriter Of The Year, Best Urban/Hip Hop Album, Best Video and Best Male Solo Artist. He also won the 2004 APRA Silver Scroll Award for ‘Not Many’.

In 2005 Scribe was accorded an International Achievement Award at the Tui Awards and sold out venues across Australia and New Zealand with his critically acclaimed concert tour.

Michael Gudinski said signing Scribe, one of New Zealand’s most exciting artists, to Mushroom Music NZ Ltd was incredibly thrilling for the company and illustrative of the company’s determination to take publishing to a new level in New Zealand.

“Under the direction of Jackie Dennis, Mushroom Music NZ is moving from strength to strength.

“I’m proud to say that Mushroom Music NZ is the leading publisher in New Zealand and adding a songwriter of Scribe’s calibre this early in the year excites me no end.

“I’m a strong believer that New Zealand artists should be represented by a local office and that royalties should stay in New Zealand.

“I can’t think of a better way to start the year. We’re thrilled that Scribe has signed with Mushroom Music NZ and look forward to many other great NZ artists coming on board throughout the year.”
