The dynamic duo - AKA Tim and H - hail from Christchurch and have been making waves since bursting onto the local music scene with their 2017 EP, Black Diamond.
Now Dillastrate are gearing up to release their debut full-length record, and they’re offering up a couple of tasters by way of the recently released single If I Was and Vibe With You.
Vibe With You is an effortlessly cool song, which comes together with an infectious old school groove tinged with neo-soul; some seriously smooth vocals and thought-provoking lyrics.
“The song tells the story of a man who simply accepts that his partner treats him awfully and hopes that one day they will change. We have all known somebody in this situation at some point in our lives, and may have even tried to intervene,” says Tim.
“It also touches on the stigmatised subject of the battered man in the hopes of starting a discussion and getting it out into the open. The juxtaposition between the lyrical content and the upbeat, happy groove shows the willing ignorance of the man in this situation and his naivety in the face of an abusive partner.”
Vibe With You is co-written and co-produced by Dillastrate and Ben Malone, and recorded between Auckland’s Parachute and BigPop studios.
It sets the scene for the band’s full-length record (release date TBC) of “late night slow jams, bleeding heart ballads and wonky sideways grooves.”
With soul at its heart, and pop, hip-hop and electronic sensibilities, the self-titled album is the net worth of the Dillastrate’s loves, frustrations and influences. It is opposing forces coalescing naturally to create a sound that is consistent, artfully shaped and lovingly crafted. Watch this space!
No stranger to live performance, Dillastrate have toured New Zealand countless times and have tackled staple music festival stages, including Northern Bass, Rhythm & Vines and Electric Avenue. They recently toured New Zealand with Katchafire, and also with Sons of Zion, and have just completed their Album Hype Tour performing in Auckland and Wellington.
