In 2010 Secret Knives’ debut album Affection was released by A Low Hum to critical praise in the NZ underground. The work of multi-instrumentalist Ash Smith, its left-field guitar pop heralded the arrival of a precocious, promising songwriter and then… nothing happened.
Despite Secret Knives disappearance Affection remained a high-water mark for ambitious bedroom-pop. Now A Low Hum is pleased to finally announce its long-gestating follow-up Snuff. Sweeter, darker, noisier, and more melodious - Snuff pushes further down the rabbit holes Affection hinted at.
Snuff will be released worldwide digitally on October 22 by A Low Hum and as a limited edition cassette in collaboration with Prison Tapes. Digital and cassette pre-orders are available now from Secret Knives’ Bandcamp page or www.prisontapes.com. All cassettes come with a download code for an exclusive digital-only companion EP, Ashley Smith’s Blue Period, which collates exploratory ambient instrumentals written alongside Snuff.
Today also Secret Knives share the album’s opening track Spinning Top. A slow-blooming anthem, Spinning Top builds towards a grooving crescendo and Secret Knives’ singular brand of chopped up and resampled guitar-squall.
