The internationally renowned House of Shem is undoubtedly one of New Zealand’s most successful reggae bands, established in the early 2000s by the late Carl Perkins (formerly of the beloved Herbs) and his two son's Te Omeka Perkins and Isaiah Perkins.
The band's music fuses traditional and contemporary styles to create an authentic blend of reggae, embodying the sounds of Maori, Polynesian, and spiritual roots.
The single Overtime was recorded throughout 2017 after Carl was diagnosed with terminal cancer. “You can feel the energy and spirit that he blessed the song with. His warm angelic voice and crucial skank guitar can be heard throughout the whole song,” says Te Omeka and Isaiah.
Meanwhile, ‘Te Whetu Marama’ is a dedication to the 100th Centennial of the Ratana faith, of which Carl was a staunch advocate. The band explains that on November 8, 2018, the faith celebrated 100 years since the “divine inspiration that was bestowed upon Tahu Potiki Wiremu Ratana, the founder of the Ratana faith”.
House of Shem’s nationwide tour, which kicks off in Ruakaka on October 25 and winds up in Christchurch on December 7, will be the start of an annual yearly tribute tour to honour Carl.
House Of Shem is one of New Zealand's most successful reggae bands, having so far earned two Gold album certifications, several Maori music awards and multiple Vodafone New Zealand Music award nominations.
